Course Outline
The NUSS Discovering Fingerstyle Ukulele (Level 1) course aims to foster a lifelong love for music and independent engagement. It explores the ukulele’s Hawaiian origins and creators, various types, and tuning. The curriculum highlights fingerstyle benefits like healing and relaxation, emphasizing proper posture and hand positions. Students will learn to read standard notation and ukulele tablature, which is noted for being easier to read for string instruments. Key techniques include arpeggios, rest strokes, and free strokes alongside chord formation and note playing across all strings. Effective daily practice, slowing down, and repetition are stressed for adult learners.
Course Outcomes
- Demonstrate foundational ukulele knowledge and tuning.
- Apply proper playing posture and hand techniques.
- Read and interpret music notation and tablature.
- Form major and minor chords and execute fingerstyle arpeggios.
- Play notes across all four ukulele strings.
- Differentiate between strumming and picking.
- Perform simple chord melodies and understand their construction.
- Utilise effective practice strategies and participate in performances.

- Session 1: The Basics & Applications of Ukulele
- Session 2: Arpeggio Warm-Ups, Chord Formation, Strumming & Picking
- Session 3: Learning and Playing Notes on the First String, Pentatonic Scales & G Major Chord Study
- Session 4: Learning and Playing Notes on the Third String, G Major Chord Study
- Session 5: Learning and Playing Notes on the 4th String, Learning and Playing a Chord Melody Song
- Session 6: Understanding & Playing Chord Melody Construction, Chord Solo Study
Trainer Profile
Dr Lim Thou Tin has completed his associate diploma (AVCM) with the Victoria College of Music (VCM) in ukulele playing in 2018 and had also previously completed higher level ukulele exams in the London College of Music (LCM) with distinctions since pursuing a formal education in ukulele playing. He enjoys playing both the classical guitar and the ukulele besides performing and teaching ukulele.
