This course, Understanding & Prevention of Dementia is for both the young and older adults, and caregivers to persons living with dementia.  The course helps us understand the differences between Dementia, Delirium and Depression, and how to prevent and delay the onset of Dementia.  The trainer also shares communication tips when communicating with persons living with dementia.

Learning Outcome

At the end of the 3 sessions, young and older adults would understand the difference between Dementia, Delirium, & Depression.  What is the co-relationship between Depression and Dementia?  How Depression increases the risk of one developing Dementia, and how Depression and Dementia goes hand in hand.

In Singapore, more people are being diagnosed with young onset dementia and the number is set to grow amid increasing awareness among the public as well as the medical community. Hence, participants will learn ways of delaying the onset of Dementia. 

For caregivers, they will be able to communicate with Persons Living with Dementia more effectively, minimising anger, friction, and frustration.

Trainer Profile

Alan Wong
RSW Gerontologist

Armed with a Social Work (社会工作学), and Master’s Degree in Gerontology (老年病学硕士), Alan has been practising as a Social Worker and Gerontologist in the Community Social Services sector handling Adult Disability and Elder Care. His interest is in Dementia Care for Persons Living with Dementia.

Alan was instrumental in setting up the Social Service Agency, Abilities Beyond Limitations and Expectations (ABLE) where it provides the 3 R (Rehabilitation, Retraining, and Reintegration) programme for the Adult Disability population.

As a Gerontologist, he was the Assistant Director for Community Outsource Services in Lions Befrienders and later moved on to AWWA and Viriya Community Services to head the Home Care Service for the Adult Disability and the Elderly programmes.

His area of interest is in Dementia Care and Prevention for Persons Living With Dementia (PLWD).

Alan anchors his work on his rich clinical knowledge and operations know-how to help the elderly live well, with shorten comorbidity as the elderly age.
